Just
got back from Cancun, Mexico and we had a fantastic time. The
flight was under four hours so Ariel managed the flight just fine.
When we got there,
we were bombarded at the airport with hotel workers trying to sell
their hotel and basically wanting us to visit and/or book the
excursions with them.
The resort we were staying at was about a 30
minute drive but we didn’t mind being in an air conditioned shuttle. We
stayed at the All-Inclusive
Barcelo Costa Cancun
Resort, which we loved.
The staff was
friendly, and the hotel was close to the beach. Ariel’s favorite
was the pool, it was huge and he spent most of the day in it!
He liked the beach until he saw fishes and that was it. He would no
longer swim in it. The crowd was a nice mix of young, old, singles
and families.
There were a ton of
activities throughout the day and great music playing by the pool.
The food was good but after about 4 days of eating at The Albatros
we were sick of it. On our last day we ate at the Hard Rock Café.
There were 3 other restaurants but you had to make reservations by
11 am which I never had the chance to do.
One drawback was that unbeknownst to us, the
Captain Hook Cruise Ship was
docked next to our resort. On our first night as we were eating
dinner, the ships cannon was set off and the loud explosions
startled poor Ariel. When we looked to the beach the cruise had
just taken off. So between 7 and 7:30 pm we could not eat dinner.
Ariel would only go once he saw that the ship was gone.
We visited Chichen-Itza
at Yukatan
and saw the Mayan Ruins, he loved that! We also got to swim in a
Sacred Cenote but again Ariel spotted fishes and that was a no-no.
Some things that concerned me were the
fact that there were no lifeguards at the resort pool and beach.
This seems to be an ongoing theme in Mexico. We made sure we
had four eyes on the boys the entire time we were there. I also noticed a lot of structural
damage in the streets as we walked. So one needs to be mindful
of where they are walking and stepping on. Also, crossing the
streets were a challenge and nerve racking. Look out for cars
because no one seems to stop for pedestrians unless there is an
Officer around.
Although I felt safe one needs to use
common sense when traveling to a foreign country. Stay with a
group and don't travel alone, especially at night and this goes for
anywhere that you visit.

Overall it was a
great trip! Don't let what the media says deter you from
going. You will truly miss out on visiting a wonderful
country!
